The September 1st First Tuesday Series program at the Crestview Robert L. F. Sikes Public Library will feature not only a talk exploring folk musical instruments by Dale Palmer but also Appalachian, old-time, and gospel music performed by the Pelican Pickers.
The Pelican Pickers will present “Exploring Folk Musical Instruments” for the September 1st First Tuesday Series program at the Crestview Public Library.
For this program the group members will describe each instrument and play a song or tune that features that instrument. One example might be to feature a harmonica and banjo and then play “Oh, Susanna” highlighting those two instruments. Other instruments to be included in the program are the fiddle, mandolin, accordion, guitar, recorder, penny whistle, Native American flutes, ukulele and mountain dulcimer. The genre varies and will include old timey country, Cajun, Irish, Native American style, as well as other songs and tunes. Most of the songs come from the 1800s or earlier and the early 1900s.
The free program begins at 10:30 a.m. with coffee and cookies served at 10 a.m. when the doors open. The library is located at 1445 Commerce Drive behind the Post Office in north Crestview. Call 682-4432.
The Pelican Pickers (with local members from Fort Walton Beach, Shalimar, Niceville, Crestview, Destin and surrounding areas) started out as an Appalachian mountain dulcimer group 16 years ago but have since augmented their sound with a variety of other acoustic instruments. The group jams on Monday nights at 6 p.m. at the Shalimar Baptist Church and performs locally about twice a month at church dinners, retirement homes, libraries, hospitals, art festivals, schools, and dulcimer festivals.
